How To Teach Your Dog To Fetch

The "fetch" and "retrieve" command is one of the dog obedience commands that is more instituted for the purposes of fun.Your dog will really enjoy the time spent with you playing fetch and retrieve. This is also a great form of exercise for your dog!

Here is a quick technique for training your dog the "fetch and retrieve" command in 8 steps:

step1. Start out in a room in your house with your dog.

step2. Make sure you have a ball and some treats.

step3. Pitch the ball a short distance and and voice the command "fetch" after your dog runs and gets it, voice the command "release". If he doesn't want to release it, bribe him with the treat and take it from his mouth saying "goodboy".

step4. Repeat this process with lots of praise and reinforcement.

step5. Move from the room in your home to your backyard and begin to increase the distance that you throw the ball. All the while rewarding your dog for fetching the ball and returning it with praise and a treat.

step6. Slowly start to minimize the times you reward with the treat and more and more praise.Believe it or not, your dog will much more desire the praise than the treat.

step7. Continue with the distance becoming longer and you can now start to use a freezbie or whatever type item you want your dog to fetch and retrieve.

step8. Now that you have your dog trained to "fetch" and "retrieve", enjoy the time you spend with him, I can assure you he will!
