TRAIN YOUR DOG TO STAY

The "stay"command is another basic command that you can begin to implement and you will start to see quick results. Believe it or not, your dog will love you for training him the "stay" command! Dogs are like sponges that suck up all you their owner has to offer. Here are the 10 simple steps to training your dog to stay:

step1. Make sure your dog understands a release command, such as "free" or "okay," before teaching this technique.

step2. Have your dog sit or lie down in front of you. Refer to out sit command page "Train Your Dog to Sit" and lie down command page  "Train Your Dog to Lie Down."

step3. Place your hand, palm up and open, in front of your dog's face and give the command "Stay".

step4. Say "Goodboy or goodgirl " at the exact moment your dog exhibits the behavior you want.

step5. Say the release command after (within 1 to 2 seconds), followed by treats and repetitious praise.

step6. Reward your dog even if she only "stayed" for 1 second and always offer rewards and praise for even slight indications of understanding.

step7. Lengthen the amount of time your pet remains in the stay position very gradually, and slowly move farther away.

step8. Remember to say the release command after every successful "stay" as you increase the length of time your dog  remains in the position.

step9.  Before moving to far away from your dog or moving into another room,make sure your dog fully understands the command.

step10. Train your dog in 5-10 minute sessions.
